Good photography isn’t all about fancy cameras and equipment. It’s more about experience, skill, emotion, and, most importantly, the desire to create.
Hi! I’m Heather Rickelman, a 26-year-old small business owner and the mastermind behind HMK Photography.
My passion for photography has slowly become who I am, and I’ve been working behind the lens for over seven years now. I spent four years as a photographer and senior editor of our college yearbook, where I learned how to edit photos, compose images, and meet deadlines. I developed an eye for telling stories through my work instead of just snapping pictures. I spent a year in a portrait studio as a photographer, where I honed my skills at posing, working in difficult situations and how to best use studio lighting. It was here that I realized I wanted to offer my clients more than an overcrowded waiting room full of hassled parents and screaming children. I branched out on my own, and HMK Photography was born!
Those prior experiences, both positive and negative, have molded me into the photographer and person that I am today. I’ve been in business for over two years now, and, while I had no idea about how difficult it would actually be, I had the support of my parents and friends who helped me realize that hard work and dedication pay off.
From first contact all the way to product delivery, I strive to make myself as open and as available as possible to my clients. I bring a unique perspective to the table and do my best to convey emotion and beauty in my role preserving your memories.
When not shooting or editing, I enjoy being outdoors with my husband, hanging out with friends and watching Chicago Bears football!
